Volunteering

If you would like to experience what its like to work on an organic vegetable farm, but don’t have time to do an internship, consider coming out to the farm on a regular basis to volunteer. You will have the chance to harvest, wash and sort produce, do some weeding, and learn a bit about the ins and outs of farming life.

Although we greatly appreciate any help on the farm, volunteering requires a commitment from the volunteer of at least one day a week for at least 8 consecutive weeks. It takes time to train anyone into the specific skills of vegetable farming, and this commitment ensures that it is a worthwhile experience for both the farmer and the volunteer.

Events

Throughout the season we will host a few events on the farm, to give you a chance to visit and get to know us. More will be posted when specific dates and events are decided.

Internships

Roots and Shoots offers a comprehensive farmer training program through our season-long internship. We offer a stipend, lunches, lots of vegetables and transportation to and from the farm. The internship involves weekly “farm walks” to learn all the ins and outs of insect pressure, plant diseases, weed control, irrigation, season extension, and growing techniques. The internship offers intensive experience in hand tool and machinery operation, direct marketing, weeding, harvesting, and packing of a large variety of vegetable crops. Once a month, we visit other farms to see other models of viable farm businesses.

In return, the interns work a 40 hour work week from May till October.

Let us know if you would be interested in any of these opportunities to get involved on Roots and Shoots Farm.
