The Week From Hell!!!
As farmers you'd expect we'd frequently experience logistical issues considering the complexity and depth of our endeavour. HOWEVER, sometimes the winds of fate really wind up and give you a gut-punch when you're least expecting it! This week's highlights: Both four wheelers broke down. The impeller in the electric irrigation pump melted. I spent a morning getting the gas backup pump hooked up to the intake line (boo, gas is bad), which meant hauling the pump, tools, gas cans, etc back and fourth by hand as the four wheeler (did I mention?) was broken. The fertigator then started coughing and sputtering. Today even the gas pump stopped working. Jess Weatherhead made the call ("Oil?") and after a little top up it was going again. But the biggest baddest news of all is that the garlic has some weird mould on it, and we now have to harvest it as quickly as possible!!! Aside from that, things are going well. The veg looks beautiful, and the team is great. We're grateful for the warm sunny weather, even if it requires more watering!!!
La semaine d'enfer En tant que fermiers, il faut s'attendre à rencontrer fréquemment des problèmes de logistiques considérant la complexité et l'étendu de notre travail. TOUTEFOIS, il arrive que le destin se retourne contre nous et nous envoie un bon coup de poing dans le ventre au moment où on s'y attend le moins! Le récapitulatif de la semaine : notre deux quatre-roues ont brisés. La roue à aubes de la pompe électrique pour l'irrigation à fondue. J'ai passé un avant-midi à rebrancher la pompe à essence au tuyau de ravitaillement (boo, l'essence c'est mauvais), ce qui veut dire que j'ai du transporter la pompe, les outils, le réservoir d'essence, etc. à pied puisque le quatre-roue (ai-je mentionné?) était en panne. Le tracteur pour la fertilisation s'est ensuite mis à tousser et hoqueter. Aujourd'hui, même la pompe à essence à cesser de fonctionner. Jess Weatherhead a trouvé le problème (Huile?) et après un petit remplissage elle s'est remise à fonctionner. Mais la plus grosse mauvaise nouvelle d'entres toutes est que le champ d'ail a développé une étrange moisissure et que nous devons maintenant le récolter le plus vite possible!!! À part tout ça, les choses vont bien. Les légumes sont magnifiques et l'équipe est géniale. Nous sommes reconnaissant de la belle température ensoleillée, même si cela nécessite plus d'arrosage!!!
The mornings are beautiful in the veggie patch, and here Maude and Katherine are harvesting cilantro for the baskets!

We're getting ready for the first chicken move of the year, so that they get fresh pasture to make those egg yolks oh so yellow!
Nous nous préparons à déplacer les poules pour la première fois cet été afin qu'elles aient de l'herbe fraiche à manger et qu'elles pondent des oeufs bien jaunes!
The big fall plantings of beets are really growing, which is great as beets are the one thing we've never grown enough of for the winter.
La grande plantation d'automne de betteraves pousse très bien, ce qui est super car nous n'avons jamais planté assez de betteraves les hivers précédents.
All the fall brassicas (cabbage, brocolli, kale) are really growing well too, and its looking good for a long and plentiful fall harvest. Why are we talking about fall when it's only July? Cause we're FARMERS.
Tous les brassicacées d'automne (chou, brocoli, kale) poussent également très bien, et ça regarde bien pour une longue et abondante récolte d'automne. Pourquoi sommes-nous en train de parler de l'automne alors que nous ne sommes qu'en juillet? Parce que nous sommes des FERMIERS.
Peppers will be in the share very soon! They are getting so big and plentiful!
